We must accept this cup as offered, not altered – Martin Sheen †photo (13)

Scripture: *focus your attention on expressions that draw you closer to Emmanuel – God with us…

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.  John 1:1-5 NRSV

Advent Prayer Week 4: *when I pray the Father aligns me to his heart…

Give us, O God, the vision which can see your love in the world in spite of human failure.

Give us the faith to trust your goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness.

Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts.

And show us what each one of us can do to set forward the coming of the day of universal peace.

Frank Borman—Apollo 8 space mission Christmas Eve Prayer, 1968

Meditations: *are any of these words for you today?

God, who foresaw your tribulation, has specially armed you to go through it, not without pain but without stain.

C.S. Lewis

God is the only one who truly completely gets it because He knows the intimate ways of our minds and hearts.

Beth Moore

Write your troubles in the sand—Carve your blessings in stone.

I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I just lived the length of it.  I want to have live the width of it as well.

Diane Ackerman

As we grow up, we learn that the people that weren’t suppose to ever let us down, probably will.  You’ll have your heart broken and you’ll break others hearts.  You’ll blame anew love for things an old love did.  You’ll fight with your best friend, you’ll cry because time is flying by and eventually you’ll lose someone you love.  So take too many pictures, laugh too much, forgive freely, and love like you’ve never been hurt.  Because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back.

Night is purer than day; it is better for thinking and loving and dreaming.  At night everything is more intense, more true.  The echo of words that have been spoken during the day takes on a new and deeper meaning.

Elie Wiesel

I myself am entirely made of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.

Augusten Burroughs

Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what.  If you don’t listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won’t tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.

Catherine M. Wallace

“It’s supposed to be hard.  If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it.  The hard is what makes it great.”

Quote from Jimmy Dugan in A League of Their Own

Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.

Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least.

Questions: *thinking about a small gift you have been given recently…

In this season of giving – can you give yourself the gift of imperfection? Can you cut yourself a bit of slack? Can you accept that he who is perfect loves you warts and all?

Prayer: *pray for anything comes to mind when you hear the words “imperfect” and “enough”

For warm hands to hold, enough to eat, and words that heal a sin sick soul, Lord hear our prayer.
